The urethra is the tube that carries urine out of the body. The urethra can become narrow and cause difficulty and discomfort when a man urinates. This condition is called urethral stricture. In some cases, urethral obstruction may require immediate medical attention. Most men with stricture will experience discomfort in urination and decreased urinary flow. This starts gradually by affected persons finding themselves pushing or straining to get urine out. In others, the problem may appear suddenly and without any previous difficulties, requiring immediate care.

Causes:

The most common cause seems to be inflammation or injury. Scar tissues can develop gradually from:
• Injury to the penis or straddle injury to the scrotum or perineum.
• Infections, often sexually transmitted such as chlamydia, gonococcus.
• Insertion of catheters or instruments into the urethra during surgery or procedures.
The scar tissue makes the urethra narrow, making it difficult for urine to pass. Sometimes inflammation or injury to the urethra occurs long before the tightness becomes apparent. In other cases, the obstruction occurs quickly after urethral injury.

The most obvious sign of urethral obstruction is a weak urinary stream. Other symptoms may include:
• Forced urination.
• Pain during urination.
• Urinary tract infections.
• Urinary retention.

• Urethral dilatation.
• Urethrotomy.
